Our School crossing patrols help children and adults to cross the road safely on their way to and from school. They are commonly known as “lollipop” people.

There are over 140 patrol sites in Nottinghamshire. They are primarily provided for children aged 5 to 11, at sites which meet the necessary criteria.

A valuable and rewarding role in the community 

The School Crossing Patrols service has been operating in Nottinghamshire for over 60 years. With the aim of helping children to and from school. They are now a familiar and integral part of the school journey for many children. 

Patrols have a legal power to stop traffic to cross any pedestrian, adult or child, and failing to stop is an offence.   

Communities, parents and children in the county value this service greatly. Although drivers and other members of the public sometimes take patrols for granted, it is only when they are not on duty that people realise how much they are worth. 

Today’s crossing patrols are better equipped to carry out the job than ever before with high quality uniform to protect them from the weather and help them be seen by drivers. They are not only trained to work on the crossing point but also in dealing with the issues they are likely to come across when working in a front-line service on the highway. 

Each crossing point meets agreed criteria based on the number of pedestrians crossing, the amount of traffic passing and various other factors about the site. The site can be anywhere on a route to school and may serve children from more than one school.  

From time to time, staff unavailability will mean that the service cannot be delivered to existing sites. Local schools are advised of this as soon as we become aware. 

School Crossing Patrol Responsibility 

School Crossing Patrols are responsible for:   

• Stopping the traffic and operating the crossing for children and adults wishing to use the service 
• Operating the crossing only within the prescribed duty times 
• Operating the crossing using the correct stop sign and wearing the full uniform (hat and coat) 

In the event of an accident or incident on or near the site, safety at the crossing and for children wishing to cross, remain the priorities of the School Crossing Patrol. 

The local school(s) will be notified when a Patrol is not available for duty. 

Any health and safety concerns should be reported to the Road Safety Team.

School Crossing Patrols can operate in the morning or afternoons, or both, in term time only. We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, this post is therefore subject to an enhanced DBS check.

Pay: £12.60 per hour

We currently have vacancies in all districts of Nottinghamshire, including Mansfield, Carlton, Newark, Hucknall, Arnold and Stapleford.
