
Bikeability Level 1 is primarily aimed at year 3 and year 4 children or year 5 and year 6 as part of a combined course. The 2-hour session is delivered in an off-road traffic-free setting – typically a playground, where the focus is on fun.
Riders must be able to control the cycle and maintain balance unaided and without stabilizers, for 10 metres. Every rider will receive the Bikeability Award package (a certificate and badge).
What do the sessions include?
- Preparing for a journey including clothing & correctly fitted helmet
- Carrying out a simple bike safety check
- Basic bike control skills
- Use of gears and sharing space with other riders
What else will they have learned?
Linked activities:
The rider will demonstrate the skills through linked activities, practising:
- Cycling continuously – starting, pedalling and slowing down smoothly
- Stopping with control and stopping quickly
- Identifying and avoiding static hazards and dynamic hazards (e.g. other riders)
- Looking behind and all around
- Riding with one hand
