Via provides highways, fleet management and maintenance functions to the residents of Nottinghamshire in partnership with Nottinghamshire County Council.
This includes the maintenance of roads, footways, signs, lines, lighting and signals, salting and snow clearance, the delivery of highway improvement services and the management of activities needed to support the county’s highway network of over 4,100 kilometres of roads and its 93,000 streetlights.

Highway Maintenance and Repairs
We maintain all highways and highway-related assets such as signs, bollards and lights throughout the county. Our primary role is to keep the highway safe for all users, which we achieve through a programme of planned, preventative, cyclical and reactive maintenance.
Major Projects
We work with partners to design, project manage and construct major schemes to improve transport infrastructure in Nottinghamshire. These projects help to deliver the county council’s strategic vision and growth within the county.
Improvement Schemes
We deliver hundreds of improvement schemes each year across the entire county. From road surface improvements to drainage and interactive speed signs, we work in partnership to design and implement an extensive programme of improvements to benefit highway users.
Street Lighting
We maintain and improve street lights and traffic signals. This includes the implementation of new energy-efficient LED lights, saving millions of pounds and reducing future maintenance requirements, as well as implementing the latest traffic signal technologies.
Grass Cutting
There are over 21,500,000 m2 of grass verges on the county’s highways. These are cut on a cyclical basis by our seasonal maintenance teams to ensure that the highway remains safe and that visibility is not impeded.
Gritting and Winter Maintenance
With 23 gritting lorries and drivers on standby every night from the end of October through to April, our winter maintenance team ensure that Nottinghamshire’s roads remain safe to use in adverse conditions.
Gully Cleansing
We operate a risk-based approach to gully cleansing in Nottinghamshire, using historical data collected from individual gullies to ensure that those most likely to cause problems are cleaned more regularly.
Highways Trees and Hedges
Hedges and trees on the highway can restrict access for pedestrians and cause damage to vehicles. Our team maintain highway-owned hedges and trees and ensure privately-owned foliage adjacent to the highway is managed by owners.
Rights of Way
There are over 3,200km of rights of way in Nottinghamshire. We work in partnership with landowners to ensure the public can access and use this network as easily as possible.
Cycle and Road Safety Education
Our expert team deliver cycle training and road safety education to a range of age groups. Young people benefit from the nationally-recognised Bikeabilty training scheme and we also have a wide range of road safety courses delivered in schools across the county.
Safer Highways
We have a team dedicated to making Nottinghamshire’s highways safer. They analysing the data from all injury accidents on our roads, looking for trends and implement improvement schemes. They also undertake safety audits of all new changes to highways in the county.
Fleet Management
Our fleet management team not only look after Via’s fleet of vehicles but also Nottinghamshire County Council’s wider fleet. This ensures vital services such as school transport and meals on wheels services can be delivered to residents.
Roadworks Coordination
With over 4,400km of roads, our coordination team works with Via’s operational staff, utility providers, transport operators and other construction companies to keep disruption caused by roadworks in the county to a minimum.
Licenses and Permits
Our license and permits team work closely with coordination to ensure that individuals and organisation have the authorisation to place equipment such as skips and scaffolding on the highway for a monitored period of time.
Highways Searches
Part of our highway assets team is dedicated to providing a highways searches function. For a fee we are able to provide the records for any area of highway including its adoption status.
Traffic Signals
We maintain traffic signals across Nottinghamshire, along with designing and developing new schemes. We look to improve signals with the latest technologies, reducing congestion and energy consumption.
Emergency Highways Response
Via responds to emergencies on the highways in Nottinghamshire. This can include blockages caused by extreme weather events, flooding and damage to the highway caused by incidents and collisions.
