Course Overview:

Cables and buried services underneath the ground represent a huge hazard to all civil engineering and construction operatives. Cable or pipe damage can result in expensive repairs, delays to work and personal injuries. The cable avoidance tool known as the CAT is used to locate buried services and being able to use a cable locator is essential to the safe running of your project.

Course Content:

The NRSWA CAT & Genny/Cable Avoidance course is designed to give operatives and supervisors the skills and knowledge to be able to safely conduct cable avoidance mapping to find out what is beneath the ground before they start digging. The course will cover the following:- Safe use of CAT and Genny

  • Safety in location and avoidance of underground apparatus
  • Depths of underground apparatus
  • Different types of safety warning markers used by utilities
  • Location CAT and Genny pattern techniques
  • Interpretation of plans showing location of underground apparatus and cables
  • Identifying risk of underground apparatus
  • Pre-use CAT and Genny locator checks
  • Correct Usage of generator (Genny)
  • Interpreting signals from the Cat and Genny
  • Tracing Techniques for locating electric, water and telecommunications cables
  • Establishing line and mark apparatus

Course Objectives:

The aim of the NRSWA Supervisor course is to provide delegates with the skills and knowledge to supervise work to the standards prescribed by SQA in -line with the current New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA).

During this course delegates will learn through a range of classroom-based and practical training and assessments by our fully qualified, experienced trainers.

By the end of this course delegates will be able to observe an operative surveying a work site, setting up and taking down a site,  make informed decisions and recommend remedial action.

Additional Information:

The NRSWA training group may contain a mix of both Operatives and Supervisors. This helps to simulate a real-working environment during the practical sessions.

Delegates will be asked to bring PPE with them – a full list will be provided in the joining instructions upon booking.

Delegates will be required to refresh this course every 5 years to renew their street works card.
