Client Challenges
The new Rushcliffe Arena development opened in 2016 which included a brand-new leisure centre and Rushcliffe Borough Council Offices. During peak times there were problems with car parking due to insufficient capacity, with cars regularly having to park on grassed areas. Rushcliffe Borough Council approached Via to undertake an initial feasibility and provide a range of options for a new car park extension and alterations to the existing car park to address issues with the current arrangements.
Our Solution
Via provided a range of options and budget prices to meet the clients brief. Once the preferred option was selected and approved by Rushcliffe, Via were appointed to deliver the detailed design and project management for the scheme. The project team was led by David Collins in the Environmental Management & Design Team with support from Andrew Gregory and Steve Marston who assisted with the detailed design of the car park works. They prepared all the contract drawings with support from Barbara Colaceci and Kate Howard as well as tender and contract documentation with support from Mohammed Haque. Electrical Design support was also provided by Robert Flaxman in the Signals and Lighting Design team. Via project managed the works throughout the construction phase including supervision of works on site, chairing progress meetings and authorising interim payments in accordance with the contract. The site works commenced in June 2018 with substantial completion of the new car park in August 2018 (Phase 1) and the car park alterations in Sept 2018 (Phase 2). The team also designed a new cycleway (Phase 3) to the north of the Arena which opened to the public in November 2018; linking existing cycleway infrastructure on Collington Way to the west of the Arena complex. This was also delivered as part of the same contract and provides significantly improved access not only to the Arena itself, but also to the wider cycleway network.
Partners/Contractors
The Principal Contractor for the works was Thomas Bow City Asphalt.
Value
The overall budget for both phases of the car park works was ~£500k and an additional £100k for the Phase 3 cycle path. Phase 2 alterations to the existing car park commenced in early August 2018 and were completed by late September 2018. Construction of the cycleway commenced in September 2018 and was completed late November 2018.
